はじめに…

元のテレビシリーズを見て育った世代ですから、やっぱり｢ダーティペア｣という名前に魔力を感じてしまいます。フラッシュでやはり一番斬新だったのは木村貴弘さんの絵柄でしょう。自分の知り合いも製作に関わっていた作品だったので感慨深いです。

I'm in the generation that grew up watching the original series featured on Japanese television, so there is no question the name "Dirty Pair" has a particular charm for my self.  There's no doubt the DPF series was most distinct thanks to the art styles of Mr. Takahiro Kimura.  Friends of mine were working on this series, making it even more memorable.

翻訳作業中のあれこれ 第一シリーズ第一話、物語はガーナ―とWWWAのコンピューターとの間の会話から始まります。コンピューターが大阪弁で喋るのですが、機械的なものと捉えているものに大阪弁を喋らせることで暖かみを持たせコンピューターらしくない演出をを意味しています。これを翻訳している時点でわたしはアメリカの南部なまりを活用することにしました。コンピューターに南部なまりを喋らせることで原作と同じような効果を得られるのではないかと思っていたわけです。もちろん方言やなまりを違う言語で表現することは大変難しいです。なにしろある人にとっての地方っぽい方言も他の人からすれば母国言語となるわけですから。 In the first episode of the first series, the story begins as a dialog is going on between Garner and the WWWA computer.  This computer talks with strong Osaka dialect, the effect is that the computer sounds strangly disarming and uncomputer like.  At the time, I chose to go with a US Southern accent, feeling it would do the best job of replicating the mismatch in the original.  Representing dialects and accents are always tricky because one person's regional dialect is another person's home language tone.
この表現が最初出てきた時はかなり困りました。当時わたしはコンピューターやインターネットについてあまり知識が無かったので単語の意味を調べることが出来なかったのです。サイレンの中で｢カーネル｣の崩壊について連呼されますが。コンピューター関連用語ということがわかったのですが、それ以外まったく頓珍漢でした。結局は答えはアニメエキスポで待ってました。ダーティペアの作者、高千穂遙さん自身がそこにこられていたので、直接尋ねることが出来ました。今日日はインターネットの御蔭でこういった資料探しはかなり楽になりました。 One of the lines completely stumped me.  Back when I was translating this, I was not familar with the computers and the Internet, so it was not easy for me to look up the meaning of this word.  Inside the Siren, references are made to the breakdown of "ka-neru".  I could recognize it as being an imported word. presumably English, but I had no idea what it was refering to.  I knew it had something to do with computers from the context of its usage but that was about all I could figure out.  In the end I had to wait until Anime Expo rolled around the corner to find out.  There, the author of the Dirty Pair series, Mr. Haruka Takachiho was there, and I was able to ask him.
Now with the advent of the Internet, it has become much easier to do research like this.
In seires 1, episode 3, a reference to "Double Edge 48" comes up, but this is the code name for a military exercise that takes place in the climax in the series.  The name is similar to "Linebacker" (NATO operation) and "Team Spirit" (a Joint US-Korean operation).  The "48" at the end is probably short for 2248, the (presumed) year when all this is taking place. 第一シーズン第三話で｢ダブルエッジ48｣という単語が出て来ますが、これはシリーズのクライマックスで展開される軍事演習の作戦名です。この名前は｢ラインバッカ―｣(NATO軍の軍事演習作戦)や｢チームスピリット｣(米韓合同軍事演習作戦)などに似ています。単語の最後にある48とは恐らくこの演習が執り行われているのが2448年だと言うことを指しているのでしょう。
A reference from DPF series 1, episode 5 has Kei referred to as "Madam" instead of as "Teacher."  Some of you that are familar with Japanese might have caught this "discrepency."  This is a subject that comes up many times, so I have written about it in the common translation issues page here. これはDPF第一シリーズ第五話に出てくる話題ですが、わたしはケイが｢先生｣と呼ばれているのを｢マダム｣と翻訳しました。日本語の先生を英語に翻訳する時、多くの方は単純に"teacher"と翻訳しますが、これには色々問題があります。あまりにもよく出てくる事柄なので定番翻訳問題の中にこの点について書き連ねました。
完成品に関して

わたしが聞く限り、日本語版のケイとユリの声はかなり個性が強く、はっきりと差別化されていましたが、英語版に関しては差別化が足りないように聞こえました。別にそんなに下手と言うわけではないと思うのですが、ふたりとも同じように聞こえたのが残念でした。

Regarding the Final Product

While I admit this is something rather subjective, it seemed to me that the Japanese voice talent of Kei and Yuri was very distict from one another, but the voices in the English dubbed version was not as distinct.  Frankly, I believed their acting was perfectly fine, but the two voices sounded far too similar to each other.
